She waved her handkerchief to incoming ships every day for 44 years. The story of the Waving Girl spread among sailors and around the world. The namesake statue, created by Felix de Weldon, the renowned sculptor who created the United States Marine Corps Memorial, honors Florence’s enduring spirit.
